The School Fairy
Who is the School Fairy and how can she help you and your child?
Dear Families: We know that millions of school-aged children have difficulty going to school because they are afraid. We also know that this fear, often called separation anxiety, can be almost as difficult on the caregiver as it is on the child. And while separation anxiety is perfectly normal for short periods of time, the quicker children feel comfortable at school, the quicker they start learning.
Just like you, we have kids who struggled with fears about starting school. So, we are pleased to introduce you to The School Fairy. She is rooted in child psychology but her whimsical tale will bring some fun into a stressful time. The included parent guide helps explain the science behind the School Fairy such as the use of behavior management strategies and has tips on improving communication with the teacher and your child. We also provide a certificate of achievement and stickers so children can decorate their own treasure box, thus making the most out of her story.
She worked for us and we know she can help you… after all, she’s magic!
Dr. Ruby Natale Andrew (pictured right) is a practicing clinical child psychologist in Miami with expertise in early childhood development. She received her dual PhD and PsyD doctorate degrees in 2000, and completed a fellowship in pediatric psychology at the University of Miami School of Medicine in 2003. She shares a passion for both research and writing in the field of child psychology and has published several articles on topics including obesity, child abuse, and brain injury. Her research has received national media attention and has led to both television and media interviews on The Early Show, ABC news, Washington Post, and others. She has also written a book on how to wean your child from the pacifier, entitled Pacifiers Anonymous: How to kick the pacifier or thumb sucking habit. She has traveled the country presenting at numerous conferences on how to promote healthy child development. Dr. Andrew is also a working mother of one daughter. Dr. Andrew has experienced the benefits of the School Fairy first hand. She developed the School Fairy when her young daughter had trouble going to school. The School Fairy’s magic brought joy and relief to both mom and daughter!
Kirsten Brown, Esq., (pictured left) began her professional life as a teacher in both public and private schools. She then attended the University of Miami School of Law where she graduated magna cum laude with a juris doctor degree, served as managing editor of the University of Miami Law Review, and received many other awards and honors. She practiced in one of Florida’s oldest and largest law firms and was published numerous times including multiple articles on education law. After the birth of her two boys, Ms. Brown gave up the practice of law and opened a Learning Express Toys store in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She has remained involved in education by serving as a board member on the University of Florida Alumni Association Board of Directors and as secretary of the Parent Teacher Association of her sons elementary school. When her youngest son suffered from separation anxiety, she reached out to her friend, Dr. Andrew. Dr. Andrew shared the concept of the School Fairy with her. Ms. Brown then watched as her son’s fears turned to excitement. It was then that Ms. Brown suggested they turn the idea of the School Fairy into a story that could help children everywhere.
